GARY L. FONTANA

Mr. Fontana is a trial lawyer with 30 years of courtroom experience in the United States and Europe. He has represented clients involved in commercial disputes and government investigations in a wide range of industries. He has tried more than a dozen cases in addition to numerous administrative proceedings. While much of his reputation is based on his success in the courtroom, he has enjoyed equal success as a strategic advisor assisting both individuals and corporate clients in areas related to litigation management, legal strategies and contract negotiations.

Mr. Fontana has an extensive background in economics and economic regulation. He specializes in complex business cases – including antitrust and unfair business practice litigation, insurance, banking and financial services, real estate litigation and environmental permitting. He worked as attorney and legislative specialist in the White House and the Office of Management and Budget during the Carter Administration and was directly involved in the development and enactment of the National Energy Act and the other major energy and environmental statutes of the Carter years.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Mr. Fontana has appeared as a speaker on antitrust and insurance issues on programs sponsored by organizations such as the Practicing Law Institute, the American Insurance Association, the Association of California Insurance Companies, the San Francisco Bar Association and the Union Internationale des Avocats. He has testified before the California Legislature on antitrust issues and has successfully negotiated environmental permitting programs before a wide variety of state and federal agencies. He is a contributing editor for the State Bar of California’s upcoming Antitrust and Unfair Competition Law (4th Edition) and has been a member of the PLI Insurance Law Advisory Panel since 1998. He is regularly identified as one of Northern California’s “Super Lawyers” by San Francisco Magazine.

Mr. Fontana has been actively involved with human rights and economic development programs in Latin America. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Washington Office on Latin America.

EDUCATION

Mr. Fontana graduated from Cornell University with “with honors in Economics” in 1968. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1971. At Yale he was a member of the Board of Editors of the Yale Law Journal
