Ms. Shartsis is one of the founding partners of Shartsis Friese LLP.  She specializes in complex business litigation, including contract disputes, business torts, unfair competition, antitrust, corporate and partnership disputes and banking and finance litigation.  She has also represented employers in wrongful termination and discrimination cases.  Her practice has included representation of financial institutions, manufacturing firms, partnerships, corporations and individuals.

In addition to her litigation practice, Ms. Shartsis has served as a party-appointed arbitrator in complex commercial cases.

Significant Cases:

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, et. al. v. Alameda County, California, et al.:  Participated in the defense of Alameda County in a landmark case brought by the pharmaceutical industry challenging a first-in-the-nation regulation requiring prescription drug companies to provide for the disposal of all unused prescription drugs sold in the County.  The County prevailed in the Federal District Court, and its decision was upheld by the Ninth Circuit.  The United States Supreme Court denied certiorari.

Rabobank v. National Westminster Bank:  Participated in the defense of NatWest (formerly National Bank and now owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland) against a claim by Rabobank (a major Dutch bank) for approximately $200,000,000, involving litigation in California and ultimately in England.  The case was decided in NatWest’s favor at trial in England, and fees of approximately $25 million were awarded to NatWest.

In Re National Mortgage Equity Corporation Securities Litigation, MDL 647:  Participated in the representation of a number of savings and loans against, among others, Bank of America and Wells Fargo Bank, which at the time was one of the largest mortgage-backed securities frauds in American history.

Ms. Shartsis is a contributing author of California Federal Civil Rules providing general and procedural commentary published by LexisNexis (Matthew Bender).

A substantial portion of Ms. Shartsis’ practice has been in federal court. She served as a Lawyer Representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference from 1994 to 1997. Her state court practice has included litigation in San Francisco, Marin, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Contra Costa County Superior Courts.

Ms. Shartsis served on the Board of Governors of the Northern California Chapter of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers from 2005 and served as President of the ABTL Board in 2012. She has been on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Legal Aid Society, Employment Law Center since 1993 and served as Chair of the Board from 2008 to 2010.  She is a past Chair of the San Francisco Bar Association Litigation Section Executive Committee and served two terms on the Judiciary Committee. She is a member of the American Bar Association Litigation Section and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation.  She has served on numerous panels on a variety of topics, including case management, arbitrator disclosure obligations and law practice issues.
